My journey with the Milky Way (Online) Newborn Retreats

The Milky Way Retreat holds a special place in my heart  and I can honestly say that this retreat is the only training, in-person or online that I have ever taken in my career. The Milky Way Online Retreat is an online learning event for Photographers from all over the world which is held once a year.

The 2016 Newborn Retreat

I first began my career not long before the first retreat in 2016. I was working in people’s homes. I didn’t know much about newborn photography except that I loved it and wanted to be great at it.

Before the retreat I was trucking along on my own trying to figure everything out by trial and error. I was so stretched  to purchase my ticket to the retreat at the time but after watching the first video I never looked back and it was money well spent, as you will see below.

Some of the topics weren’t what I thought I wanted to learn, but I can easily say that I learnt something from EVERY SINGLE VIDEO, this was the beauty of it, and I was pleasantly surprised.

Simple things started to click for me, such as lighting, angles. Even watching Brigette Schaffarzick from Penguin Pictures demonstrate her potato sack workflow, absolutely blew my mind! I didn’t necessarily want to copy her workflow but it inspired me to get my own solid workflow in place (the one I will be teaching) and this was a game changer for me.

Not only did this retreat give me lots of wonderful advice but the part that I appreciated the most was that the instructors inspired and taught me to have faith in myself.

Here is the last session I did just before the 2016 retreat, and my session after.

The 2017 Newborn Retreat

The 2017 retreat rolled along and no doubt I was signing up. Even though I was really happy with where my work was at this point I was still eager to learn as I knew it would be worth it even if I learnt just one little thing. And I am glad I did. This retreat gave me the confidence to switch from natural light to studio lights and again filled me with inspiration for the genre.  Before and after...

For the 2018 retreat I am one of the instructors and I still cannot believe it - what an honor. I have chosen a topic that I think will speak to all skill levels and hopefully there will be a lot of ‘aha moments’ in it. I am so excited to share my knowledge with you all and my aim is to help as many photographers spring forward their career as much as this retreat has for me.

I will be teaching my Stress-Free Sleepy Baby Workflow:
A stress-free way (for you and the parents) to start every session. Aimed at all skill levels, this will help you get a variety of beautiful sleepy portraits of those tiny humans every time, guaranteeing yourself a deliverable gallery in case it goes a bit pear-shaped later on.

Each year I left it to the eleventh hour to book my place in this online event and I missed out on the early bird price. I genuinely believe this is one of the best things you can do for your career. Hand on heart - you absolutely WILL NOT regret this investment.

Sign up today (...just do it).
